General Land Office Allows Use of Alcohol at Alamo
President General of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas disagrees with the General Land Office decision to allow alcohol on Alamo Grounds. Below is a letter Mrs. Thompson wrote to Board Members. (click more to see letter).
Dear BOM and Chapter Presidents,
I have attached the minutes from the June 19, 2012 Alamo Committee.
I am sending these minutes to you to gather your feedback about the General Land Office's decision to allow alcohol to be served in Alamo Hall and the patio. The portion I want you to take special note of is:
Mr. Oswald said that Alamo Hall and Patio could be the only areas for alcohol consumption. The caterers would need the license for alcohol. Mr. Oswald the GLO Alamo Director is going to implement having alcohol in Alamo Hall and Patio for after hours events. Let it be known that the Alamo Committee did not agree or approve this policy.
I have been discussing the use of alcohol with Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson for sometime. I told him DRT opposes the use of alcohol on the Alamo Complex out of respect for the 189 men who died fighting for freedom and a purpose greater than themselves. The behavior we need to maintain is similar to a church or cemetery, where respect is shown. The Alamo is not Disneyland, and you can party or drink nearby at any hotel. Mr. Patterson says he understands our position but will probably go ahead with the use of alcohol.
How is it that DRT operated the Alamo for 106 years without costing the State one penny and we didn't need the use of alcohol?
How do you feel about this issue? Is DRT too old fashioned? Maybe this is a way to make money?
I would appreciate your comments. Please feel free to share this with your chapter members because they need to know.
Sincerely,
Karen R. Thompson

I just sent this message:
Jerry Patterson's recent decision to implement having alcohol at the Alamo is disgusting. It's bad enough that the state spends money on the Governor's mansion and ignores the most revered shrine in Texas. The GLO should put together the Advisory Council stated in the new law, rather than turning financial decisions over to the GLO and new director who are only concerned about the bottom line. Governor Perry, I urge you to help our Alamo!
Sincerely,
Sarah Reveley
