McKenna Carpenter, 11 of Cambridge Elementary competed in the United States Olympic Fencing North American Cup in Virginia Beach this month. She won the bronze medal for her age bracket in épée fencing. To compete in the North American Cup you must be a nationally ranked fencer for your weapon, which McKenna is currently ranked #2 in the nation in Y10 women's épée. This event was also an Olympic qualifier with hundreds of fencers competing. Multiple fencers earned placement on the US Olympic Team headed to London this summer. McKenna will now be headed to the Summer National Championships this July in Anaheim, California. McKenna is coached by former US Olympian Velizar Iliev of Olympian Fencing Club in San Antonio, TX.
