Olmos Park anticipates slight drop in property tax revenue PDF Print E-mail

Like many cities dealing with lowered home values, Olmos Park will see a slight dip in property tax revenue as officials hammer out an operating budget for the coming fiscal year.

The decrease is somewhat negligible at .72 percent, from a taxable base totaling $522.2 million in 2009 to $518.4 million in 2010 from which property tax collection benefiting the fiscal year 2011 bottom line will be derived. (read more).

SAN ANTONIO -- A retired priest was arrested after police say he exposed himself to a park police officer.

The man, 71-year-old Chester W. King, Jr. of Converse, was arrested Tuesday in Olmos Park. (read more).

Olmos Park may be poised for a real dogfight. City Council was mulled a proposed dog leash law Aug. 19 before delaying action on the matter until next month.

The issue has come up several times in the past, but a vocal contingent of residents espousing free-range canines prompted council to table the matter as was done at a previous meeting. (read more).

A recent report in the North Central News revealed controversy over the process of appointing Gene Allen to the Olmos Park City Council.

While we can always do a better job of filling vacancies next time, this appointment combined with recent elections could radically shift the direction of our city. (read more).

Olmos Park political observers are crying foul over an appointment to fill a City Council vacancy, a process detractors say was rushed and dismissive of a wide pool of candidates who had expressed interest in filling the unexpired term.

In a June 28 special meeting, former councilman and current Board of Adjustment member Gene Allen was appointed to fill the seat vacated June 17 by Joe Izbrand. (read more).

Hanging out in the park is a good thing...most of the time. But an undercover San Antonio park police officer discovered it's not always a picnic in Olmos Park.

Tuesday morning a man pulled up next to an unmarked vehicle and began a friendly, perhaps too friendly, conversation with the officer. (read more).

An Olmos Park neighborhood threw all their stuff on the lawn to help a Haitian earthquake victim.

From furniture to art work, to golf clubs and clothing went up for sale. The proceeds from Saturday's giant yard sale are being used to reunite 10-year-old Bethlie Paul with her family. (read more and video).

“It's a great time for Olmos Park.”

With those words, Olmos Park Mayor Susan Gragg opened a presentation Friday recapping a week-long charrette process, a series of design workshops inclusive of residents and merchants.

City officials hope to beautify their town, a long-held goal triggered in earnest with the hiring of design specialists to advise them and stage the charrette at City Hall. (read more).

With renovation and remodeling work completed, the doors officially opened Friday at the new home of the Children's Bereavement Center of South Texas.

The center moved from its Craig Place house to 205 W. Olmos Drive after months of construction and fundraising.

“We are so proud and amazed at the way everything has just come together,” said Executive Director Traci Gomez in a press release. (read more).

Olmos Park City Councilman Joe Izbrand resigned at the June 17 council meeting, citing mounting work and family obligations.

“For the past four years, I have had the tremendous honor of serving as a member of the Olmos Park City Council,” Izbrand said in his prepared statement.

“It is a humbling experience to be chosen by your neighbors to serve as their representatives and I hope that, in some small way, I have made a meaningful contribution to the betterment of our community.” (read more).
